Advantages of COB (Compared with SMD and HP)
COB, or Chips on Board, integrates multiple LED chips into a single lighting module. COB LEDs offer significant advantages, including low thermal resistance, a larger heat dissipation area, better lighting effects, and higher luminous efficiency.
COB LEDs Have Low Thermal Resistance
Among various LED components such as high-power LEDs (HP), SMDs, DIPs, etc., COB LEDs have the lowest thermal resistance and the best heat dissipation.
Packaging of High-Power LEDs (ab. HP)
The total thermal resistance (Rth-total) of high-power LEDs is the sum of the thermal resistances of the die-attach adhesive, heat sink, thermally conductive grease, and PCB.
Rth-total = Rth-1 + Rth-2 + Rth-3 + Rth-4
Packaging of COB LEDs
The total thermal resistance of COB LEDs is the sum of the thermal resistances of the die-attach adhesive and ceramic substrate, without the need for a heat sink or thermally conductive grease. Rth-total = Rth-1 + Rth-4. COB LEDs have low thermal resistance. Heat generated from the LED chips can be effectively conducted outward, enhancing the reliability and lifespan of the LEDs.
